Wireless Security
Continuous Computing has extensive insight into Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and Packet Processing. We understand the necessity for network equipment providers to incorporate wireless security into their 3G / HSPA+ and 4G / Long Term Evolution (LTE) infrastructure quickly and cost-effectively.
DPI / Packet Processing is strategic for Continuous Computing; we have 13 DPI / packet processing customer wins.
We invested early (and heavily) in ATCA DPI / packet processing platforms to deliver application-ready FlexTCA platforms that support packet processing-based functions.
Because of this foresight, we are the market leader in ATCA DPI / packet processing.
What’s more, the thought leaders within our engineering and product line management teams have written extensively about the specific requirements of, and opportunities for, DPI:
- Modern Day Challenges for Lawful Intercept
- DPI Applications: Friend or Foe?
- Use DPI to Increase Mobile Subscriber ARPU Despite Flat-Rate Plans
- Why Do 3G and LTE Need DPI?
- Bringing DPI into Wireless Networks
- Why Is DPI Essential for Wireless Networks?

To illustrate our system-level approach to addressing Wireless Security key requirements, let’s drill down a layer.
Wireless Security Gateways
Wireless Security Gateways are needed because in the LTE Evolved Packet Core (EPC), an operator’s mobile network will be “All-IP” and is therefore more vulnerable to external attacks. More traffic is expected to originate from femtocells or WiMAX and this will come into the mobile core over an “untrusted” fixed line broadband link such cable modem, DSL, etc.
To protect the mobile core, network traffic entering over these “untrusted” links must be screened for security threats. For some applications such as femtocells, this process also needs to involve encryption of traffic between the mobile core and home-based femtocells where IPsec will be used.
Wireless Security Gateway functionality uses packet processing technology and DPI algorithms to provide advanced firewall capabilities, anti-virus, and encryption of traffic where required. By analyzing flows up to the application layer (supports Layers 4-7) it is possible to also provide advanced security features including Intrusion Detection / Prevention (IDS/IPS) and anti-Denial of Service (DOS).
Continuous Computing can enable network equipment providers to provide Wireless Security Gateway capabilities as a standalone network element or integrated with other functions such as the Femtocell Gateway. In addition to security features, the design can also be augmented to provide traffic management to support Quality of Service (QoS) and/or service access control.
