These diagrams illustrate how Trillium protocols, system software and ATCA hardware may be combined to create application-ready 3G / HSPA+ GGSN and SGSN systems:

GGSN

GGSN: Gateway GPRS Support Node

  • The GGSN application can support control plane interfaces to the SGSN and CGF (Charging Gateway Function).
  • It can also manage routing and QoS-related control plane functions on the Gi interface (Internet side of PLMN).
  • Data plane relay function in the GGSN can provide interworking between the Gn interface (GTP-u) and the Gi interface (L2TP, PPP, etc.).

SGSN

SGSN: Serving GPRS Support Node

  • The SGSN application can include support for control plane interfaces to the RNC, HLR, CGF, GGSN, and other SGSNs in other PLMNs.
  • SGSN application modules can include the RM (Resource Manager), GMM (GPRS Mobility Manager) and SM (Session Manager).
  • IuPS (RNC) and Gn (GGSN) interfaces carrying user traffic would be supported by RL (Relay) and SM (Session Manager) application modules.
  • Platform resources supporting the control and data planes can be scaled independently based on specific deployment and performance requirements. For smaller deployments, or where appropriate, it is also possible to combine the GGSN and SGSN functions into a single chassis.
