More Systems
Systems | Softswitch
A Softswitch provides call-control intelligence for establishing, maintaining, routing and terminating voice calls. The Softswitch also serves as an interface to enhanced service and application platforms, leveraging the power of packet networks.
A Softswitch typically contains the following functions:
- Supports all TDM signaling local variants (SS7, ISDN, R2, V5, INAP, etc.)
- Compliant with a wide range of packet voice technologies (ATM, MGCP, SIP,H.323)
- Enables feature-rich infrastructure with advanced Class-4 and Class-5 services
- Compatible with a wide range of feature servers for delivering value-added services
- Easy deployment and operation with comprehensive tools, statistics and management interfaces
Applications
The Softswitch is typically used on the following applications:
Wireless / Wireline Tandem switching
- MSC to packet networks
- Class 4 switch alternative
IP Centrex
- Offers advanced Class-5 Centrex functionality for Corporate and SME businesses
- Eliminates the need of IP-PBX on the customer premises
Class 5 Switch Alternative
- Full class 5 feature set support
Internet Offload
- Divert Internet traffic off the circuit network before it reaches tandem switches
Trillium software from Continuous Computing provides the signaling software for all of the above applications.
Signaling Interfaces
Softswitches typically use the following signaling protocols to control Media Gateways:
- MGCP
- MEGACO / H.248
- SIGTRAN for transporting ISDN, SS7 traffic to/from softswitch
- ATM (Q.93B, Q.SAAL, IME, PNNI)
- SIP, SIP-T, Various extensions
- H.323
- V5.2
Critical Features
Price/Performance
- The softwsitch market is highly competitive and operators need systems which allow them to serve large numbers of subscribers profitably and cost effectively.
Programmability
- Programmability eases the task of changing features and functionality in a Softswitch, shortens time-to-market and increases the longevity of the equipment.
Modularity and Scalability
- When designed properly, such systems can effectively add more computing, protocol processing or I/O functions independently without requiring an entire system upgrade or replacement.
High Availability
- Softswitches must be designed with carrier-grade reliability. Systems must meet or exceed the industry benchmark of "five-nines" availability. Continuous Computing's DFT / HA helps achieve this.
