First company to provide stream cipher security on industry-standard ATCA products to meet rigorous 3GPP encryption specifications for LTE eNodeB and MME

LAS VEGAS (CTIA WIRELESS 2009) AND SAN DIEGO – April 1, 2009 Continuous Computing, the only company deploying uniquely architected systems comprised of telecom platforms and Trillium software, today announced the addition of a Snow3G accelerator to the company’s FlexPacket ATCA-PP50 packet processing blade and FlexTCA pre-integrated 10GbE ATCA platforms. The addition of Snow3G encryption to the company’s Long Term Evolution (LTE) products will enable network equipment providers (NEPs) and mobile operators to leverage the latest stream cipher algorithm for authentication and network security while complying with the Third Generation Partnership Project’s (3GPP’s) rigorous specifications for encryption.

By providing an optimized hardware-based accelerator, Continuous Computing’s new combination provides a high-performance, low-cost solution that supports greater than 2Gbps with 200-byte packets. With Snow3G encryption, both the PP50 and FlexTCA will support enhanced 3GPP security requirements for LTE network elements such as eNodeB and Mobility Management Entity (MME). Particularly for high-throughput core network elements such as the MME, 3GPP’s encryption requirements are difficult to achieve satisfactorily with software-only approaches, which would require an entire dedicated high-performance network processor to achieve similar performance.

“The compelling end-user benefit of LTE is high bandwidth connections, and hardware acceleration of these encrypted user sessions is vital for realizing LTE’s promise,” said Mike Coward, chief technology officer and co-founder, Continuous Computing. “The integration of the Snow3G accelerator alongside our complete Trillium LTE software offering reinforces Continuous Computing’s ability to deliver on our mission of accelerating LTE into the network.”

The PP50 Snow3G mezzanine also supports a high-performance TCAM for conducting fast look-ups and providing pattern-matching capabilities. These features are especially useful for wireless networks using IPv6 headers where binary search methods in Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) are too cumbersome and slow. In addition to Snow3G, other security algorithms supported by FlexTCA and PP50 include IPsec, AES, and Kasumi.

The FlexPacket ATCA-PP50 blade and the FlexTCA System with Snow3G encryption are available now.
