Joint effort combines Trillium LTE software from Continuous Computing and Cavium’s OCTEON processors to provide immediate support for complete range of LTE network equipment
SAN DIEGO – February 11, 2009 – Continuous Computing, the only company deploying uniquely architected systems comprised of telecom platforms and Trillium software, today announced its collaboration with Cavium Networks (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications, wireless, and storage applications. The joint effort will provide Network Equipment Providers (NEPs) with a combined high-performance solution that can support the complete range of Long Term Evolution (LTE) network elements, from LTE Base Stations (eNodeBs) to Evolved Packet Core (EPC) devices, including Mobility Management Entity (MME), Serving Gateway (SGW), Packet Data Network (PDN) Gateway, and Evolved Packet Data Gateway (ePDG).
The combination of Continuous Computing’s Trillium LTE software and Cavium’s OCTEON multi-core processor family, which boasts a 16-core MIPS64 architecture with market-leading performance and advanced hardware acceleration, allows the companies to offer NEPs immediate solutions that support high-performance LTE networks. Available now, this powerful combination from Continuous Computing and Cavium Networks solves critical performance issues for NEPs as well as reduces time to market, project risk, and overall cost and complexity.
Continuous Computing’s Trillium LTE software – including Diameter, S1-AP, eGTP, GTP, MAC, PDCP, RLC, RRC, and X2-AP – supports LTE Femtocells, macro/pico LTE base stations, and each of the network elements within the EPC. All Trillium LTE protocols are compliant with the latest 3GPP-defined LTE specifications and are multi-threaded for optimized performance on multi-core processors. Trillium LTE software also includes reference applications for relevant LTE interfaces such as LTE-Uu, S1, S5, S6, S7, S10, X2, etc.
Since announcing general availability of Trillium LTE software in September 2008, Continuous Computing has secured four LTE design wins with Tier 1, 2, and 3 NEPs located in North America and Japan. Similarly, Cavium has secured LTE design wins at three of the top five Tier 1 NEPs worldwide using its OCTEON processors. Because wireless operators worldwide have established ambitious goals for rolling out LTE services, it is important that NEPs have early access to LTE technology solutions from companies like Continuous Computing and Cavium.
“The value-add of tight software and silicon integration for our NEP customer base seeking an immediate end-to-end LTE solution is a key differentiator behind our partnership with Cavium Networks,” said Manish Singh, vice president of product line management at Continuous Computing. “The combined solution will service the entire suite of LTE network equipment – access, edge, and core – and validates our technology differentiators and continued leadership in the LTE market.”
In contrast to the broad range of available LTE solutions from Continuous Computing and Cavium, competitive offerings have only addressed a single LTE network element or, in most cases, have targeted a subset of functionality on just one of the LTE network elements. In fact, one of the key benefits of engaging with Continuous Computing is the ability to tailor and accelerate the development of virtually any LTE network element via the company’s Solutions & Services business practice, announced earlier this week.
“Continuous Computing leverages a 20-year history in wireless software development with market-leading Trillium integration expertise,” said Rajiv Khemani, vice president and general manager of Cavium Networks’ Networking and Communication Division. “Continuous Computing has optimized its Trillium LTE software for OCTEON MIPS64 multi-core processors, and this optimization combined with OCTEON’s high performance control, data, and services plane processing capabilities make the collaborative offering an ideal platform for LTE network equipment.”
The Cavium Networks OCTEON Multi-core MIPS64 family of processors provides advanced hardware accelerators for key LTE functions such as packet processing, compression, encryption, pattern matching, and quality of service. The integration of Trillium LTE stacks with the OCTEON processor and these accelerated functions provides high-end performance and reduces customer investment in integration efforts, thereby speeding time-to-market for NEP LTE systems.
The combined Trillium LTE and OCTEON processor solution is available now.
