Trillium's MEGACO Software Selected by Alcatel for Developing Trunking Media Gateways

Successfully Completed Joint Interoperability Testing at University of New Hampshire's InterOperability Labs

LOS ANGELES - April 03, 2001 - Trillium Digital Systems, Inc., an Intel company and leading provider of communications software solutions, announced that its interoperability tested, high-performing Media Gateway Control Protocol (MEGACO/H.248) IP telephony software solution was selected by Alcatel to accelerate the deployment of its next-generation Trunking Media Gateways. By implementing Trillium's high-performing, scalable solution, global telecommunications equipment manufacturer Alcatel will enhance its competitiveness in the Internet telephony market through the development of cutting-edge IP telephony gateway solutions. Trillium's implementation for both the media gateway and media gateway controller has been successfully validated with Alcatel's trunking media gateway product for interoperability at the recently concluded second MEGACO interoperability event organized by the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Labs. Trillium's Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP and MEGACO/H.248) IP telephony software solution is currently used in a variety of equipment ranging from carrier-grade SoftSwitches to high-density Trunking and Access Media Gateway solutions to low-density Residential and Small and Medium Business gateways. This high-performance software makes it possible for equipment manufacturers to design carrier-class systems that exceed the performance, capacity and scalability requirements of next-generation networks, while its relatively low memory requirements lend it versatility to adapt to low port Residential and Small and Medium Business (SMB) gateways.

"Alcatel is one of our most important customers in the converged network infrastructure market, having licensed our MGCP in the past and now migrated to MEGACO and RTP/RTCP," said Frank Morese, vice president of marketing for Trillium Digital Systems, Inc. "The carrier grade features and functionality provided by Trillium will pave the path for the deployment of a robust media gateway product. This bears testimony to the multi-protocol versatility that equipment manufacturers need in the present dynamics of the market and explains how Trillium can help address those very requirements through our broad portfolio of products." The feature-rich MEGACO/H.248 solution supports all the defined packages and includes a highly robust text encoding/decoding engine, while the Session Description Protocol (SDP) module is tightly integrated to ensure higher efficiency. The modularity of the implementation ensures easy addition of Real-Time Protocol/Real-Time Control Protocol (RTP/RTCP) to the MG side.

Binary encoding and Distributed Fault-Tolerant/High-Availability (DFT/HA) functionality are scheduled for future releases of the product. Alcatel and Trillium have a long-standing business relationship. Over the past years, Alcatel has trusted Trillium's stability and reliability through the application of Trillium's proven solutions such as SS7, MGCP and H.323 for its IP telephony products. Trillium's broad portfolio of solution offerings helps address the multi-protocol versatility needed by equipment manufacturers for the development of next generation, cutting-edge products for the converged network infrastructure market. "As a leader in architecting the converged network, Alcatel looks forward to applying Trillium's MEGACO/H.248 IP telephony software solution for the development of next-generation trunking media gateways," said Bruce Barton, vice president of product line management at Alcatel. "Trillium's MEGACO/H.248 superior product performance, coupled with its proven track record and excellent customer support made it a natural choice in the selection of our protocol outsourcing partner."

Continuous Computing acquired the portable software business of Trillium Digital Systems from Intel Corporation in February 2003.
