Continuous Computing Announces Trillium LTE Software Support of Latest 3GPP E-UTRA LTE Specifications

With six LTE design wins and counting, Continuous Computing is uniquely positioned to bring together key hardware and software technologies required for faster time to market

BERLIN and SAN DIEGO – May 19, 2009 - Continuous Computing, the only company deploying uniquely architected systems comprised of telecom platforms and Trillium software, today announced from the LTE World Summit 2009, held in Berlin, Germany from May 18-20, that its recently updated Trillium Long Term Evolution (LTE) software suite supports the 3rd Generation Partnership Project’s (3GPP) March 2009 specifications known as 3GPP E-UTRA (LTE). In a separate announcement made today, Continuous Computing also disclosed that it has teamed with picoChip to jointly produce a comprehensive LTE femtocell hardware-software reference implementation designed to accelerate network equipment providers’ LTE product development timelines.

First launched in September 2008, Continuous Computing’s newly updated Trillium LTE software suite now includes version 2.1 of the Trillium S1AP protocol, which provides the interface between the eNodeB (LTE base station) and the Mobility Management Entity (MME). Trillium S1AP joins the rest of the Trillium LTE protocols including Diameter, GTP, eGTP, LTE MAC, LTE PDCP, LTE RLC, LTE RRC, and X2AP to provide network equipment providers (NEPs) with a comprehensive range of LTE-optimized protocol stacks for infrastructure supporting Home eNodeBs (LTE femtocells) all the way through to the Evolved Packet Core (EPC), including MME, Serving Gateway (SWG), and Evolved Packet Data Gateway (ePDG), among others . Trillium LTE protocols are available now and all support the March 2009 3GPP E-UTRA (LTE) specification.

LTE, sometimes called "4G wireless," is considered by many to be the successor to the current generation of Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) 3G technology. LTE promises wireless subscribers unprecedented mobile broadband data rates of 100Mbps downlink and 50Mpbs uplink, simultaneous voice and data sessions, and low round-trip latency to support real-time applications like mobile TV and gaming. In comparison, today’s 3G networks can achieve peak data rates of 21Mbps with enhanced High Speed Packet Access (HSPA+), but only in very select areas of coverage.

Because of LTE’s technological benefits, operators around the globe have announced support for the standard and are expected to commence subscriber field trials later this year, which makes availability of standards-compliant products like Trillium LTE more important than ever given that the demand for LTE technology is advancing faster than originally projected.

"Many of the largest carriers in the world are committed to LTE because of the benefits it will provide their subscribers," said Manish Singh, vice president of product line management of Continuous Computing. "NEPs need to be developing LTE products now if they intend to participate in the early phases of this huge market opportunity and capitalize on the advantages of being a first-mover. With standards-compliant LTE technology solutions available today, Continuous Computing is at the leading edge of this market. We can leverage our vast experience in 3G, femtocell, and deep packet inspection (DPI) technologies to help NEPs get their LTE products to market faster."

As the first systems vendor to announce a comprehensive LTE offering spanning the entire range of LTE network infrastructure, Continuous Computing is fully invested in the future of LTE and is on the very forefront of LTE technology development with standards-compliant products already available and shipping today. Continuous Computing has already garnered six customer design wins with its broad LTE product portfolio.

In addition to Trillium LTE protocols, Continuous Computing’s LTE offerings also consist of the FlexPacket ATCA-PP50 blade with Snow3G mezzanine and FlexTCA Pre-Integrated Platforms, which come complete with multiple ATCA components (switch, compute, packet processing, chassis) pre-integrated with comprehensive platform management, SAF-compliant high-availability middleware, and essential services software.

All Trillium LTE protocol stacks are multi-threaded and optimized for multi-core / multi-threaded processing architectures and include fast path modules for critical data plane protocols like eGTP. Each stack includes a reference application for the relevant LTE network interfaces including LTE-Uu, S1, S6, S7, S10, and X2. Trillium LTE software is compliant with the Trillium Advanced Portability Architecture (TAPA ®) framework and built upon more than 20 years of protocol software expertise.

The complete suite of Trillium LTE protocols and expert professional services are available now. For more information, please visit http://www.ccpu.com/products/trillium/lte.html.
