Continuous Computing Announces Breakthrough Performance on the Sun Netra T5220 Server with Industry’s First Comprehensive Signaling Software Suite for Multi-core / Multi-threaded Processors
Trillium Multi-Core SIP Combined with the Sun Netra T5220 Running the Solaris 10 Operating System Dramatically Improves Performance, Achieving 6,000 Calls per Second
SAN DIEGO – June 10, 2008 - Continuous Computing , global provider of integrated systems and services that enable telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMs) to rapidly deploy Next Generation Networks, today announced the launch of Trillium Multi-Core, the first comprehensive and portable protocol software suite customized for a new generation of multi-core and multi-threaded processor architectures. Trillium Multi-Core capabilities and benefits extend across the entire Trillium line of more than 60 standards-based protocols, supporting 3G High Speed Packet Access (HSPA), IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and Long Term Evolution (LTE). The benefits of this innovative optimization are already being realized in a demonstration system consisting of Trillium Multi-Core Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) running on a Sun Netra T5220 server, with Sun's UltraSPARC T2 multi-threaded processor, achieving a breakthrough 6,000 calls per second with processing power to spare. This represents a performance improvement of at least two times of Trillium SIP compared with any previous generation multi-core or multi-threaded processor tested.
In order to address the triple threats of declining single processor performance, rising heat, and memory latency, processor suppliers are increasingly moving to multi-core and multi-threaded architectures. As the majority of leading silicon companies introduce processors with an increasing number of cores and threads, a new class of software that can effectively utilize each central processing unit (CPU) thread is necessary for TEMs to reap the economic and performance benefits of these progressive architectures. However, harnessing this increase in processing power requires software that utilizes each core or thread, which is where Trillium Multi-Core excels. Trillium Multi-Core is standards-based, Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) protocol software that fills the gap between multi-core, multi-threaded processors and TEMs’ end applications, thereby taking full advantage of the parallel processing power. Most importantly, TEMs can realize the economic benefits of multi-core, multi-threaded architectures immediately without making substantial changes to their end application by dramatically scaling the protocol signaling and data capacity using portable Trillium Multi-Core software.

Continuous Computing benchmarked the performance of the Trillium Multi-Core solution on the Netra T5220 server, based on the eight-core, 64-thread UltraSPARC T2 processor, running the Solaris 10 Operating System . With the Trillium Multi-Core optimizations, Trillium SIP on the Netra T5220 (part of Sun’s CMT server line with CoolThreads technology) improved performance by more than two times to an incredible 6,000 calls per second (CPS) as compared to any previous generation multi-core or multi-threaded processor tested.. The improvement in capacity equates to requiring a fraction of the hardware footprint to serve the same number of subscribers, thereby reducing infrastructure costs while improving density.
