- Topic: Solving New Technical Challenges and Creating New Revenue Streams with Deep Packet Inspection
- Description: DPI allows operators to optimize the network and analyze where problems exist. This deeper understanding of the network allows them to identify which application is creating the traffic - whether it is a Voice over IP (VoIP) packet, a P2P application, email, or a Web page download. Based on this identification, different actions can be taken: traffic shaping, traffic management, lawful intercept, caching, blocking, etc. DPI is sure to play a key role in ensuring that the network delivers on its true promise of high speed data rates. However, DPI will also become more critical to helping carriers stay competitive in an era of "flat-rate" plans by increasing Average Revenue Per User (ARPU), thereby allowing carriers to differentiate their service offerings and garner additional revenue.
