Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) technology is being used to deliver many network services including traffic shaping, tiered services, policy control (e.g., fair usage) and security against attacks such as Intrusion Detection & Prevention (IDS/IPS) or Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS). These services are much more effective when placed inline with the network, also called “bump in the wire”.
Inline equipment must be protected against failure in order to avoid network outage should a fault occur. Faults could be power failures or individual boards, software or interfaces failing. While carrier network equipment provides a full high availability solution to avoid outages, for these cost sensitive “service” platforms high availability is not always possible.
The FlexPacket RTM-COP50 GbE copper bypass Rear Transition Module provides a cost-effective alternative. Using a combination of hardware bypass technology and a management processor, the product monitors the DPI platform for failures. In normal operation, traffic passes into the RTM and through to the DPI processor. In the event of failure detection – including complete power outage – the product diverts traffic around the device, thereby avoiding network outages.
By including this bypass capability inside the ATCA system, customers no longer require external bypass solutions which increase cost and result in extra devices that need to be managed in an operator’s network. Together with the FlexPacket ATCA-PP50 packet processor blade, the COP50 represents the best-in-class ATCA solution for deploying inline DPI applications.
